Year 8&9 Tread the Bard's Boards...

On Friday 12th October 45 girls wended their way to Southwark for a tour of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre followed by drama workshops from Shakespearean actors who took them through their paces variously on

A Midsummer Night's Dream
and Twelfth Night.

The theatre exuded a real majesty which photos can only start to suggest and the golden Autumnal light cast beams of history down the ages to be lapped up...

Thanks to Mrs Warnock for fastidious organisation.
The trip was a great success.

  1. When we went inside the Theatre, the first thing that struck us was the shape. It was unlike any other Theatre because it had an open roof which meant that when it rained the Groundlings got wet!
The layout was in the round and there was no proscenium arch. This meant that the relationship between the actors and the audience was intimate.
Hidden lighting kept the Theatre as true to the Elizabethan experience and the stage was set for an authentic Shakespearean play where the cast was all Male.
We could imagine what it must've been like to watch as a Groundling or as a Lord experiencing the Globe's unique atmosphere as a social space as well as a Theatre.

In our workshop in Twelfth Night we worked on Improvisation Skills and taking a scene from Twelfth Night we started to explore how we might interprate lines using mime, body language, facial expressions, movement, acting space and voice.
We explored how Shakespeare's use of the Iambic Pentameter was contrived to create a natural flow of words whilst also indicating to the audience whether the character was talking from their head or their heart and also when the character was talking to the audience to give them clues to what was likely to happen next.

From our visit we learnt how 'to be or not to be' actors and also how to consider the play as a piece of living Theatre.

  2. On Friday, October 12, 2012 Year 8 went on a school trip to The Globe Theatre. We came to school normal time, and then we went to our first lesson .We had a good view of the river Thames from the coach. At the Globe Theatre, we saw all different engravings on the floor of all the people who put in money to rebuild the Theatre. We learnt that the Globe had been built 3 times and how it moved across the River Thames and how the second one got burnt down and everyone survived. After the explanation we went inside the theatre and learnt about groundlings, lords, ladies and where they sat. The people that came to see the play in those days, didn't care about the actors, just the words. When we finished our tour we went and had a workshop with Lori. We had to read scripts and to act. We read a Mid-summer Night's Dream . Amy and Yasmeen performed the characters of Helena and Demetrius. It was great fun. We went into they shop to get some souvenirs for our friends and family. There were lots of different things to chose from. After that we got on the coach, and headed back to school.

  3. In the Globe Theatre today, our class explored and saw where the rich and poor people sat. We sat on the benches and talked about where the cannon was shot in the sky, which was from the window above. We also discussed the columns in front of the seating. If you sat in front of a column it wouldn't be as expensive. The poor people called Groundlings would stand downstairs as they couldn't afford to sit in the boxes. The rich people would sit on the side boxes where the paintings were. Also our guide told us that the people didn't really want to watch it, it was more about listening to the play. We can't wait to read the King of Shadows and A Midsummer Night Dream. By Shabri year 8
we had to go in pairs and play Helena and Demetrius and say the line 'i am drawn to thee' if we were Helena and 'i run from thee' if we were Demetrius. by Olivia year 8
